Also I was wondering if I will be allowed to bring a laptop with me because I would like to keep a journal. I have recorded a lot of BYU programming with Tivo on DVDs and I would like to watch the programs on the computer as well.Mormon A.K.A LDS Missionaries, I am getting ready to turn in my papers, any tips or advice?
Actually it all depends on where you are sent. I have lived in wards where laptops were allowed. But don't sweat it out. If you want advice about going on a mission, stop thinking about the material things like laptops and DVD's; think about the work ahead of you, and try to spiritually prepare yourself from what lies ahead.Mormon A.K.A LDS Missionaries, I am getting ready to turn in my papers, any tips or advice?
if u r goin on u 2 year missionary they won't allow the laptop. Hell u can only call home once a year
good luck
Just in case the first answer freaked you out completely, you are actually allowed to call home at least twice a year: Christmas and Mother's Day. And e-mail here in the UK is allowed once a week on P-day. But there's no substitute for snail mail; the highlight of a missionary's day is often waiting for the postman to deliver!
Along with your official call you should receive information about the area where you will be serving, things like what clothes to bring and what things it is better to buy once you're in the field. I found that list the most helpful.
And the best piece of advice I ever received was, ';You have two years to serve your mission and the rest of your life to think about it.'; So serve it the way you want to remember it!
Laptop is a ';No.'; You can keep a written journal just as easily. The only programming you'll be able to watch is at a member's home or one of the church videos at an investigators home. That's about it.
If you get sent to the Little Rock Mission, and put in memphis TN, then I'll probably see you. It is a wonderful thing that you are about to take upon yourself. Doing the Lord's work will always be good for the soul.

bring a bicycle. mormons love to ride around on bicycles.
Get ready for large doses of rejection. I went to Europe and knocked on doors every day. I got doors slammed in my face nearly every day, too. Just know that the moments people actually listen are well worth 100 or more door slams.
Tips and advice: the ones your bishop gives you are a pretty good start! The biggest ones will be to make sure you read the Book of Mormon and have a testimony of it and of Joseph Smith no matter where you go.
I know computers are not allowed personally for missionaries anywhere (unless you are working in the mission office sometime), but don't worry about e-mail - there are almost always free or cheap places available to go once a week and if not - real letters are worth a lot more in my opinion.
As for those DVDs, unless they are banned specifically from your mission, you may be able to at least take them with you or get them sent to you after the MTC, but not for your own watching. You might want to share them with members who would like to watch it (after you leave their home, of course).
P.S. Hope you get to go to the Japan Fukuoka Mission! Great place to go. If you need more advice about Japan ask another question.
