My male syrian hamster, Cookie, is three to four years old. Recently he was prone to gaining a tumor, and I have tried to keep him very comfortable, buying him a special bedding, giving him a tube to play with, etc. This tumor is huge and is viewable. But yesterday, he escaped. He went underneath the worst part of the floorboards possible, but we where amazed at how as soon as we lifted the floorboards up, he literally walked TO us. He was dusty, he had scraped his tumor, and I was extremely upset. I played with him a little, allowing him to recover from the shock, but he ran faster than he ever has. I let him go to his cage and left him for about one minute, and I heard a REAAAAALLY loud squeak. I understood who it was, and ran to my hamster to be met with the scene of his tumor being SOMEHOW caught within the bars of the cage whilst he was upside down. Im guessing it was him climbing the bars.
I attempted to get him out, but couldn't, then called for help. He was released in about one minute, but that 60 seconds did TREMENDOUS damage; he had broken his leg and it was dangling down when he walked. I got very upset and decided to let him into his cage. He tried climbing the bars again, couldn't, then went to sleep in a very awkward place in the cage. Night fell, and when Morning came around, I scouted his cage to see if he was fine - he was. But Im worried - if I take him to the vet, they won't do anything but examine him, tell us what we already know and possible even put him down.
What should I do? HELP?My lovely syrian hamster has developed a massive tumor and has broken his leg. I need advice, tips and help?
I have worked for a vet for about 4 years and unfortunately hamsters don't respond well to treatments or surgeries. Not to be harsh but the best thing for him would be to put him to sleep. He is probably in extreme pain and the stress of treatments or surgeries would end up killing him anyways. Be fair to the little guy and let him go so he doesn't need to risk worse pain by getting an infection from a broken leg. Sorry to hear about this, I had this happen to my hamster once as well and he passed away the next day. It is pain free to get him put to sleep and your doing the kindest thing you can. Sorry once again. My lovely syrian hamster has developed a massive tumor and has broken his leg. I need advice, tips and help?
you have to take him to the vet.
it is likely that the vet will put him down,
but he doesnt deserve to sit in his cage with a massive tumour and horribly broken leg,
hes probably wondering right now why his owner is letting him be in so much pain.
He needs to be humanely put down.
Well i wouldn't really take him to the vet to get any examinations since he'll probably either die soon because hamsters live up to 2-4 years and with the condition he is theory says that if you take him to do the surgery he'll probably die or right after. So my suggestion to you is to make his last days the best that you can. Like spend quali time with him and every thing.
