Coming up in a few months (this summer), I plan to try to survive in the North Carolina mountains for five to seven days. I have minimal experience camping/hiking, so I come to you for help.
As far as gear goes I plan to bring:
- Backpack
- Striker to make fires
- Axe/small knife
- Fold-able shovel
- Rope/string
- Tarp
- Collapsible pot (do they make these?)
- Metal rack (like the ones that are on grills)
- MRE packs only to use in emergency
- Flash light?
Still undecided on if I am going to bring a small tent and a fishing pole, would like to try to build my own shelter and would like to see if I could catch food without a fishing pole. Is there anything that I left out that may be needed?
Any tips as to what find of food I should look for? My dad suggested crawlfish. Any other tips of hints you might have would be much appreciated.
Thanks!Need advice/tips with a survival situation!?

the human body can go 28 days without food. So i'd say take something for protection. Like a good hunting knife. Set up a little perimeter before you sleep with a trip wire so that if any animal runs into the rope/wire it'll drop a can filled with rocks so you can here it. Find a nice clean stream to boil yourself some drinking water. And eat at least once a day. Crawfish and regular fish are probably your best bet. Learn how to clean them properly before eating. And ALWAYS and i mean ALWAYS move after eating. Bears pick up on the scent of food and may find you. So always hike to another campsite at least 1-2 miles away after eating.
I'd suggest you get a good book on survival, and also maybe do a trial trip somewhere closer to home, in case something goes wrong!
Tell someone where you are going, give them a grid ref or take a GPS with you in case of emergency. It's a good idea to report back every night to let someone know you are ok and not lying under a rock somewhere awaiting rescue.
Your list is a good start. Don't forget to take a fork or spoon to eat any food with! Make sure you aren't breaking any local laws by killing and eating animals too.
Take some emergency food too, something high in sugar such as candy.
You will need a sleeping bag or bivi bag too, or at the very least a survival bag.
To purify water, it's easiest to use some Iodine Droplets or Iodine Tablets.
First Aid Kit - if you are more than a day away from medical help, think about the worst case scenario and what you might need.
A map %26amp; compass
Waterproof clothes
Whistle or flare
A camera!!
Don't forget to check the weather forecast before you go.
