Ok...
First off, i'm 12...can sing, belt, act and love to perform.
Its my dream to be on braodway when i'm older....if i follow this dream i would go to some college in NYC...major in musical theatre probably.
But here's the glitch in my big fantasy-i'm mormon, and wouldn't want to take any jobs that perform on sunday.
if i did get picked for a part...could the understudy go on sunday?
and doesn't phantom not perform on sunday?
could you give me advice please? (please nobody say anything about forgetting my religion and just performing on sunday.)
oh and any tips for the aspiring actress?
any advice from those who have actually been on broadway?
THANKS!! :)My dream is to be on broadway. Would i have to perform on sunday? Any advice? Tips? Any with experience?
Actually, when you audition for plays, you usually have to tell them all the days you can't perform.I'm sorry but you'll have to perform on some Sundays. But, you can probably go to sunday morning church. But not at night.I've only been in 1 play where we had a matinee performance on Sunday .And that was the Cathy Rigby Peter Pan where I was John, but then i quit after about 3 months for that exact reason. But you could probably go to church about twice a month .You can't usually get and understudy to do your part that much.My dream is to be on broadway. Would i have to perform on sunday? Any advice? Tips? Any with experience?
Sunday is a pretty big day in theater. One approach would be to own whatever it is that you're doing. That way you can perform when you like and hire others to perform when you're not available.
sure, you could just stick to productions that don't play on sunday and let the director and producers know your religion interferes with your work schedule, bet the offers just come rolling in.
You would have to be pretty darn high-in-demand to be able to pull off skipping every Sunday. I'm quite sure, if you do end up on broadway, that it will be extremely hard to get out of doing a show that performs on sundays. This is a religious dilemma, and you need to choose which path you want to follow. It's like how the guy in Chariots of Fire wouldn't race on Sundays. That was a sacrifice he made because of his faith. Making difficult choices is part of life.
I'm an amateur actor, but my advice to you is just keep acting! Get as much experience on stage as possible, keep singing, and don't get discouraged. It's a tough business, but you need to be tougher.
You are twelve - have ZERO training, education ,experience - and already are picky???? YES, Broadway shows perform on Sunday. NO, they are not going to use an understudy every single Sunday because of your religious persuasion. There are Jews who perform on Friday night and Saturday, and more than likely, Adventists who perform on Saturday, Catholics who perform on holy days, and all manner of people who make a decision about using the gifts God gave them. There are of course REPRESSIVE religions who rule people so tightly that they would rather stay a member of that church, than do something they love. Only THEY can make that choice. Between now and the the time you need to choose, many choices will come your way, and you will change your mind a hundred times. Quit worrying now - the chances of you actually having the possibility of a career are SO SLIM anyway, that this is a needless worry. What if you were an astronaut? Would you need to be NOT in the space station on Sundays? What if you were a doctor? You would not save lives on a Sunday? Find the passage in the Bible where Jesus says ';which of you would have a donkey or an ox fall into a pit, and not save it on the Sabbath?'; I realize that saving a life is not the same as singing ';Oklahoma'; - but only YOU can decide - and you are FAR FAR FAR too young to worry about it now.
Added - Another responder is clearly bitter about legitimate advice I gave her on HER question - and also does not understand the Mormon faith. Just *going to church when you have time* is NOT the same as NOT working on the Sabbath. You can find OTHER outlets for your ability that will NOT conflict with your strong faith - some people are able to reconcile the two, and others need to make firm choices. Again, you have MANY years before this needs to be resolved, and you will find solutions along the way - all my Mormon and Adventist and Witness and Fundamentalist students have - it CAN be done, just not always in the way you see it now. I have over 1200 Best Answers, so clearly there are people that see I give good advice - and others just want everyone to AGREE with them, right or wrong. Nope - my standards are higher. Best of luck.
